Elm Park School Newsletter - Friday 16th August 2013 - Term 3 - Week 3

Friday 16th August  – Term 3 Week 3

Value Focus for next week:

From The Principal

Kia ora tatou katoa, Talofa, Malo e lelei, Bula vi naka, Kia orana Nga mihi nui ki a koutou, Namaste, Nihao, greetings to you all.
Welcome to Elm Park School’s Newsletter for Week 3 Term 3. This week has been another full on week for everyone with trips to Butterfly Creek, Dance festivals at Elim Christian College, Speech finals for Years 5 & 6, and Interschool Sports games.
Overseas Students - We welcomed 22 Korean students from Shinan County with a powhiri.  These students are with us for four weeks. They are enjoying being at Elm Park and integrating with our students and practising their English.
Next week on Thursday 22 August we are expecting 70 Japanese students to visit Elm Park again for the third year in succession. The Japanese students teach our students some of their traditional Japanese games and our students share some of our traditional Kiwiana symbols and games with them. This is a very enriching experience for everyone as we learn so much about each other’s cultures.
BOT meeting - The BOT meeting was held on Thursday evening in the staffroom. The BOT discussed ways in which to continue to support our community of learners so that they can achieve their potential.
PTA (Parent Teacher Association) - The PTA held their meeting on Monday evening and I know they have many exciting activities planned for the rest of this Term and Term 4.
ERO (Education Review Office) visit - The ERO team will be visiting in Term 4, so we will be busy preparing for their arrival to look at our schools performance with student achievement and how we are catering for all our learners in our inclusive environment.
Dental Clinic - Next week a mobile dental clinic will be arriving at Elm Park and will be placed the concrete pad in the back car park. This clinic will operate during the school holidays as well and will be on our school site until 24 February 2014. Please call 0800 TALK TEETH (0800 825 583) for enrolment information or to make an appointment.
Lunch tip - A very useful tip for school lunches shared by one of our BOT members.  If you cut up an apple for your child’s lunch, add a squeeze of lemon juice to the Clicklack container or reusable ziplock bag and give it a shake to coat all sides and it stops the apple from going brown in the lunch box. If you have any further suggestions please email them to secretary @elmpark.school.nz
Have a great weekend

Kind regards
Trish Plowright

Loud Shirt Day - Fancy breaking out of your normal school garb to shine brightly at school this year? Every year more and more schools take part in Loud Shirt Day. Staff and pupils have a great time comparing their unfashionably bright gear – didn’t you know black is so yesterday – and donating money to help deaf children learn to listen and talk.   Do the bright thing and please donate to help deaf kids learn to listen and speak.  We’re getting behind Loud Shirt Day and it’s time to go back to the future! Show your support by wearing your most outrageous ‘80s shirt and don’t forget your donation!
School Banking - A reminder that ANZ banking happens each Wednesday in the library from 8:20 am. New customers can open an account in the Pakuranga Branch and then bring their money in for banking each week. Contact Mrs Kerr in Room 1 for more details.  ASB deposit envelopes can be deposited on any day in the elephant box in the office.

This Week In Review

Dance Festival – “Yay”.  On Monday and Tuesday Mrs Rist’s dance class and Miss Baria’s dance class went to the Howick and Pakuranga Dance Festival.  It was really fun.  It was held at Elim Christian College.  But sadly it was raining and it was terribly cold.  We looked very beautiful in our shiny costumes.  Im sure everyone there enjoyed themselves.  By Chiquita Bolton.

Focus on Children

Room 20 has been learning about painting skills.  We have been focusing on learning how to apply paint in different ways such as sponging, dragging the paint on a piece of cardboard, using the brush in different ways, and creating negative space using making tape.  We have painted lots of different artworks to practice these techniques.  Some of paintings are below:
