Elm Park School Newsletter - Term 1 - Week 9 - 30th March 2012

Friday 30th March 2012 – Term 1 Week 9

Value Focus for next week: Trust

From The Principal

Kia ora tatou katoa, Talofa, Malo e lelei, Bula vi naka, Kia orana Nga mihi nui ki a koutou, Namaste, Nihao, Greetings to you all.

It is hard to believe that we have one more week in Term 1 left. All the classes have been working really hard throughout the term and Learning Journals are being activated with evidence of the children’s achievements on their learning journey to date.

CAMP 2012 - This week our Year 6 students have experienced three fantastic days at Sir Peter Blake Camp Merc at Long Bay on the North Shore. The weather was perfect and the students, teachers and parents have had a wonderful time. The activities are designed to build self-confidence and team building. Even the staff had a go at some of the more challenging activities. I was very impressed with the behaviour of the students and the support for each other when I visited the Camp on Tuesday.

Thank you to all the parents who gave up their valuable time to support the school by going to the camp to help out in so many ways. We appreciate your participation and support of our school’s activities in such a positive way. “Thank you” to Mrs Houghton for your catering expertise.

2013  - We will begin our fundraising for our 2013 Camp very soon. The fundraising is so that we can keep the costs down so that all our students have an opportunity to attend.

ACTIVITY COSTS - A friendly reminder for those parents and caregivers who have not yet paid the activity fees this term. Although the classes may not have been on any outside trips there has been a number of activities and resources that we have already participated in or used and we would gratefully appreciate your payment as soon as possible ($100).

ROAD RULES - I hope you are all coping with the new (old) road rule changes. Some people are clearly still finding it challenging especially when they are caught driving on the wrong side of the road outside our school gates. Please be aware that the Police will have a presence outside school at any stage and will be apprehending any breaches of road sense.

Enjoy your Easter Holidays.

Looking Ahead

FOR SALE - WORM TEA - The “Up n Go” tonic for the plant world.  Only $2.00 for a 2 litre bottle - this makes 20 litres of 100% pure, organic fertiliser that will improve the growing rate of any tree or plant.  Order at the office or look out for gate sales.

ROAD PATROL - We are still looking for help supervising the road crossing on Gossamer Drive before and after school.  If you could spare some time to help keep our children safe it would be fantastic! Please see the office or Mrs Holdom in Room 26. Thank you!

YEAR 6 WRITER'S WORKSHOP - Some Year 6 students had an opportunity to work with children's author Jill Marshall at a Writer's Workshop held at Pakuranga Library on Monday 19 March.  Jill is famous for her Jane Blonde and Doghead series of books and we enjoyed hearing how she comes up with the ideas for her stories.  Perhaps the most valuable part of the workshop was the writing tips she shared with us such as always start with deciding on the ending as it makes writing the middle part much easier!

This Week in Review

LUNCH ROOM - We now have in stock a SPECIAL Vegetarian Pizza $3 or $6 in a combo.

CAMP 2012 – A HELPERS PERSPECTIVE - Early morning, beautiful sunshine, lots of luggage, parents, teachers, students, excited chatter!!!
All packed onto the buses, goodbyes said and off to Camp MERC we go.
Three days away together at camp, “no school work” they say! But some amazing life experiences to be had.
After the excitement of finding a bed in the dorms, it all started with team building games, figuring out how effectively we could work within our teams.  Then over the next three days it was time to experience abseiling, archery, climbing, Canadian canoes, dingy games, stack em high and surfing.  All exciting opportunities, that many of us have never experienced before.  Some easier than others, some taking a lot of perseverance, others needing us to break through some fears – but an amazing achievement when we had completed them.
All in all an amazing three days together, enjoying each others company, great weather, great food, amazing fun instructors and awesome outdoor activities.
“From the east to the west, year 6’s are the best!!”
Thanks Elm Park School and Camp MERC.

Focus on Children

Room 17 have been learning that adjectives describe nouns. Adjectives make our writing more exciting for people to read.  We used our senses to describe popcorn.  We got to eat it too!
