FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Kia ora tatou katoa, Talofa, Malo e lelei, Bula vi naka, Kia orana Nga mihi nui ki a koutou, Namaste, Nihao, He mihi mahana ki a koutou katoa! Greetings to you all.
Welcome to all the new families to Elm Park School. This week we have 18 Korean students visiting from Shinan County to stay for the next three weeks. We know that our homestay families and everyone in the Elm Park School will make these students feel welcome to our school and New Zealand. This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to learn from each other.
We are looking forward to another exciting term with lots of activities coming up. Next week is Maths Week and we will be holding our Maths Olympiads on:

Parents and families are welcome to the Auditorium to observe the competitions.
The PTA is fund raising for a shade sail to provide shade over the sensory garden for our children in the summer. Please support us with the sale of the chocolates that have come home.
Pakuranga Intermediate – Orientation morning on
Monday 8 August for Year 6 students. The Intermediate will supply buses to transport the children to the school from 9.10 am – 12.30 pm. This is for children only.
Koanga Festival
At the end of Week 5 (Saturday 3 September) our Elm Park School Kapa Haka group will be performing at Somerville Intermediate as part of the Koanga Festival at 1.10pm. All our local schools - primary, intermediate, secondary - will be performing on this day. This festival is open to everyone in the community.
Our Art show (Bits on the side) will be held over Week 5. Details to come later.

LOOKING AHEAD
LOUNGE SUITE NEEDED – We are currently seeking the donation of a respectable lounge suite / couch for use in Kids Korner. If you have such a thing and are happy to give it to the school we would greatly appreciate it.
We would also appreciate any donation of clivias, bromeliads, agaves and plants that will survive in shade and damp.

This Week in Review
NEW STUDENTS – We welcome the following new students and their families to Elm Park School: Nadini Ariyaratne, Kahlan Watchorn, Aidan Herekiuha, Leilani Hoeta, Charlie Wilson, Georgia Wilson
CHOCOLATES - On Friday 5 August the oldest child in each family has brought home a box of chocolates to sell at $2.50 a bar. We would ask that you make every effort to sell as many bars as possible. Watch out for the exciting prizes. This year every child will be given the chance to win a prize, every box sold goes into the lucky prize draw and prizes will go to the child that sells the most in each year level as well as the family who sell the most boxes of chocolates. This is our most successful fundraising event for the year and we thank the Elm Park community in advance for their support. We are also looking for co-ordinators to assist with this fundraiser. DAFFODIL DAY – Friday 26 August 2011. We will have daffodils for sale for the week commencing 22 August. Gold coin donation. (Please note that this is NOT a mufti day).
PUPIL ABSENCES – The law requires regular attendance of pupils. In the interest of safety, if your child is to be absent, please notify the school at your earliest convenience either in writing for prior known absences or by email, phone or text (021 134 0916) before 8.45 am on the day of absence. All absences are recorded. Where student absence are not notified, students will be marked as TRUANT on the national register. If pupils arrive after class has commenced, they must check in at the school office upon arrival.
Focus on Children
In Room 1 we have been busy sketching, tracing, cutting, drawing, painting, gluing and decorating our Mardi Gras Masks in preparation for the Wearable Art Show – Bits on the Side - coming up at Elm Park School later this month.
We have sketched our finished masks – if you would like to see the real thing and MORE we would love to show you so come along to the upcoming Art Show on the 30th August (Year 1 – 2), 31st August (Year 3-4) and 1st September (Year 5-6).

COMMUNITY NOTICES
The Parenting Through Separation programme is now running at Willowbank School for all parents who are in the process of separating or considering separation. Live-in childcare for $60pw – Families needed - Family homes sought for part-time European Au Pairs (Demi Au Pairs) arriving in September for 3 to 6 months. These are students with childcare experience who study high-level English in the morning at The Campbell Institute in Bucklands Beach and are available in the afternoon and evenings for up to 20 hours childcare, school pick-ups, and light housework. In return, you provide full board and a payment of $60pw. Families need to live in the Eastern suburbs or within reasonable commuting distance of our Auckland campus.
