From The Principal

Kia ora tatou katoa, Talofa, Malo e lelei, Bula vi naka, Kia orana Nga mihi nui ki a koutou, Namaste, Nihao, He mihi mahana ki a koutou katoa! Greetings to you all.

Another busy week at Elm Park School.

The weather has proved to be challenging for our school sport representatives as many of the games have been either postponed or cancelled due to bad weather. However, many of our children have been busy planting for Arbour Day down by the stream. They enjoyed getting really muddy as a result of their labours.

Our classes have also be visiting the Auckland Museum’s Aqua programme as part of the whole school inquiry into our Guardianship of the World’s Water.

Thanks to Mrs Stephens for organizing the Family Fun Night last Friday night as a camp fundraiser, and thanks to the families that attended.

A reminder about the meetings to be held on Monday 4 July re Student Led Conferences at Elm Park at 9.00 am, 2.30 pm and 6.00 pm for those who may wish to ask questions and receive information about these impending conferences.

Last week an incident was reported to me that had occurred outside the school gate by our waste bins at the end of the day. As some children were emptying the paper into the bins a woman with dark curly hair driving a dark green car was reported to have invited a child into her car claiming that she would give her a lift home as she knew her mother. This incident is being dealt with by our Howick Police and discussions have been held with the parents of the child involved. As a result of this alleged incident we are moving our waste bins inside our school grounds so that none of the children will have to leave our grounds. We ask you to be aware of any suspicious activity outside our school. Please take care when driving in around our school particularly before and after school. Our Local Police will be present at our crossing as often as possible and any traffic / parking infringements will be taken very seriously by them. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Have a great weekend.

This Week in Review

NEW STUDENTS – We welcome the following new students and their families to Elm Park School: Vaelei Young

The Amazing Aqua Show - On Wednesday 29 June all the Year 4 classes went to the amazing exhibition at the Auckland Museum. We were pretty excited by the time we got there. All the classes toured the general galleries until it was their time to go into the amazing Aqua show.

We were shown into a small entry way and the guide explained how we could interact with the screens inside the room. When we got in we couldn’t believe it. We were each given a precious water droplet to think about and take care of. We watched some screens showing how we enjoy water. A gentle wall of water gurgled off to one side… then the water parted and we were astonished when we walked through it. Inside we stared at an artifact -it really made us stop and think about how people in the world get their water, from the past, to the present. We won’t spoil the show for people who haven’t seen it yet but we will say that the facts given in the show, and the amazing pictures on the walls of the circular rooms really made us feel emotional about water. We know more now about how precious water is on the planet and how we can each save this precious resource.

Arbour Day Planting by the Year 4 Classes - On Tuesday 28 June children from all of the Yr 4 classes helped Anna from the Auckland Council to plant 250 trees and shrubs on the reserve on the South side of our back field. We were very excited. When we got there we saw that the ground was super muddy and we had to plant on a pretty steep slope! A few people got very muddy but we think it was worth it. “It’s only mud and it’ll wash off,” said one of the Council helpers.

Mrs Meikle helped us to plant kanuka, and cabbage trees. We planted the trees to help the environment. When it rains, the bush will hold the soil and we won’t have erosion down at the stream. We also know when the bush grows the birds will have food. Elm Park is an Enviro School and we are proud to do more

for the school and the local community.

ATTENTION ALL PARENTS

We are updating our immunisation register as Auckland Regional Public Health Service has advised us that there is currently a measles outbreak in Auckland.

Since 1 June, 39 people have been confirmed with measles infection in Auckland and the disease is now likely to be spreading in the wider community.

The number of cases may seem relatively small in comparison to the population, but one person with measles can infect many others.

So far the Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS) has contacted more than 400 people as part of this outbreak investigation.

ARPHS advises that immunisation is the best protection against measles and immunisation is safe, effective and free.

Measles is a serious and highly infectious viral disease often causing fever, cough, sore red eyes and a rash. It can make people very sick. People with measles can be infectious even before they start feeling unwell. While almost all people will make a complete recovery, it can lead to hospitalisation and in rare cases, death.

We need you to advise us of your child’s immunisation status IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY PRESENTED YOUR IMMUNISATION CERTFICATE. Please contact the school office as soon as possible.

Regarding your child’s immunisation status:

· If your child has not received a measles immunisation (MMR vaccine), call your GP as soon as possible. Arrange a time to immunise your child as it is never too late.

· If your child has received two measles immunisations, or they have definitely had doctor-diagnosed measles infection in the past, they are considered protected. Over 95% of people who are fully immunised are protected from measles.

· If you are not sure of your child’s immunisation records, check your Tamariki Ora Health Book or call your GP. Your GP can do a blood test to check your child’s immunity to measles if needed.

· If your child is not immune or you choose not to immunise your child, they are not protected from measles. If they come into contact with someone with measles, they will likely have to be excluded from school or ECEC for up to 14 days.

The Health (Infectious and Notifiable Diseases) Regulation 1966 Part 3 r 14 (2) provides a legal mandate for the Medical Officer of Health to enforce isolation of any measles cases or contacts where this is indicated. Isolation is then the only way to prevent further transmission of the virus and to protect others in the community (like very young babies and ill people) from getting infected.

Watch your children for symptoms of fever, cough, runny nose, sore red eyes, or a rash. If this occurs:

· Call your GP or Healthline (0800 611 116) as soon as possible for advice.

· Keep your child away from school or pre-school until they are well again. Your GP will advise the safest time for your child to return.

For more information on immunisation, please call the Immunisation Advisory Centre free on 0800 IMMUNE (0800 466 863) or visit their website http://www.immune.org.nz.
